Poisoned PenThe Poisoned Pen

Whilst the Poisoned Pen was gratified to see Persuasion at the top of last week's poll, he must wonder at some readers' choice of Pride and Prejudice. Whilst admittedly 'entertaining', the adaptation would surely have caused dear Jane to shudder at the passion so blatantly shown on the screen. Darcy in the tub?  Horrors. Worse yet, Darcy diving into a pond - I don't think so!

So now the film industry goes for another essentially English tale, The Lord of the Rings. Whilst normally shunning the shabby world of Science Fantasy, the Pen sees this tale for what it is, the establishment of English myth and the loss of innocence and beauty that comes from greed and power. In this epic struggle of good and evil, the story pivots around that essential wise man and warrior, the wizard Gandalf.  In these days of Hollywoodization,  the likes of Mel Gibson as William Wallace inflict themselves upon an unwary world (though not unweary, after endless hours of his tedium). One is left to wonder, with some trepidation, what inappropriate fop will be cast in the wizard's role?  Hugh Laurie?  David Schwimmer? The Poisoned Pen wonders who you would choose?
