Bets Paid as Irregulars Prevail

The Village Idiot was the scene of some riotous celebration last week as the Irregulars last-second victory kept them out of the Cub Scout League and assured of Downs League football for another season.

It emerged after the game that the vicar of Puckering, Nigel Banks, had placed a small wager against E. Imbiben priest Father McGintus Hoole. These two stout supporters of local ales and village lsport had agreed that both would complete a yard of ale with the loser paying for both. Father Hoole was up first and, despite his normal penchant for Scotch,  was clearly up to the task. Whilst the Reverend Banks struggled to the end, he was helped by the chants of "Go Vic Go" and only spilled the final drops.

Arm in arm, Father Hoole and the Reverend Banks noted that this was the only way to deal with the longstanding rivalry between the two villages. "We hope our relationship of mutual respect and co-operation will be a model for other religious groups," added Reverend Banks. Father Hoole refrained from further comment, although he did go on to  finish the evening with an interesting version of Molly Malone.
